We’re having a lovely ‘Indian Summer’ here in the Pacific Northwest. While it’s so very nice not to start the rain season yet, the weather outlasted my ambition to keep my summer plants alive.
While there are many perks to living on the top floor with a ginormous balcony and southern exposure, there’s a HUGE ratty pine tree out back that doesn’t help the acidity of the back yard or the endless battle with spider mites and aphids one has with container gardening anyway. Don’t get me wrong…there are a few lovely lace-leaf type maples out back, rhodies and a giant magnolia. And the pine does gives the second, master deck great privacy and shade, so I don’t complain about it…other than when I’m battling spider mites.
Anywho, I dug up the dregs of my tomatoes and the requisite NW kale, and put in NOTHING edible. That’s such a huge jump for me. I just put in things that are pretty and go with the flow of the season.
Some pretty grasses, some coral bells, cordyline, and some mums in oranges and burgundies. There are some really good, I mean REALLY GOOD fall and winter container designs here on the Portland Nursery site. I use their site for guidance even if I’m not going to make it to the actual nursery.
This is a scented geranium called a ‘Citronella Plant’ although it’s not true citronella, it sure smells like it! I plonked a decorative pumpkin in next to it because it’s GORGEOUS THERE.
I’m really loving the reds and greens outside on the deck. It’s so lovely to see the afternoon sunlight as I look out, setting everything on fire. Aw, crap, makes me all poetic. ok. I’m done.
I’m not looking forward to having to bring in my houseplants. They’re still loving the outside weather for now. Guess I should look up the first frost date here pretty soon though.
This is an Angel Wing Begonia. I’m pretty surprised I’ve kept her alive for about a year. Houseplants are not my strong suit. READ: I KILL HOUSEPLANTS.
Here are some cuttings and aloe and a couple jade plants. READ: EITHER CHEAP FROM TRADER JOE’S OR FREE BECAUSE I KILL HOUSEPLANTS.
Wot. You don’t have plants just hanging with your MOOD bag? Pshaw.
I bought the toddler a princess dress just because, they’re out and Halloween. She’s wearing it every second she can and I love it. I only let her get one…it was a tough call between Elsa, Arial and Repunzel, but Arial won out.
